Statnett reports sharply higher grid project costs driven by tight global supplier markets and geopolitical unrest

    • Statnett is building more power grid than ever. But many countries are building grids at the same time, and global unrest makes it costlier and less certain. Prices rise faster than ordinary inflation.
    • For large projects where Statnett asked for bids in 2026, 80–90 percent of the cost rise comes from higher prices, higher interest rates and general uncertainty, says CEO Elisabeth Vike Vardheim.

Statnett installs sensors on fjord crossings to extend power line lifespan

    • In early August, Statnett set up three new measuring systems on fjord crossings on the Sima–Samnanger power line in western Norway. They span Fyksesundet, Granvinsfjorden and Osafjorden. The area gets heavy ice and strong wind.
    • The systems come from the research project D-fjord. Sensors measure how the lines vibrate. A weather station on the mast measures wind direction and speed. 20 vibration dampers (devices that calm the movement of the lines) were also fitted.

Pilot scheme gives six business projects in northern Norway earlier grid connection totalling 34 MW

    • Four grid companies have launched a trial: six businesses in Lofoten, Vesterålen and Harstad can now connect to the electricity grid even though it is at capacity, in exchange for accepting the risk of being cut off if something goes wrong.
    • Normally new customers in the area are capped at 1 MW. The trial allows 1–5 MW per business, adding 34 MW in total, on top of 80 MW of new demand already approved for the next three years.

Statnett's new Sauda transformer to add 400 MW of grid capacity and up to NOK 1 billion in annual market benefits from 2027

    • Statnett is building a new transformer at Sauda. Engineering firm Sweco designed it, and contractor BG Suldal has started groundwork. The transformer will be ready in 2027.
    • Once installed, the grid can carry 400 MW more power – enough for 120,000 to 160,000 homes. About half of that increase already came from operational changes made in winter 2024–2025.

Statnett recommends new 420 kV line between Helgeland and Sweden to unlock 700 MW of additional capacity in Northern Norway

    • On 14 September 2026, Statnett published a concept study (KVU) for the Helgeland–Sweden corridor, recommending an upgrade from 220 kV to 420 kV as quickly as possible.
    • The upgrade would enable 700 MW of additional consumption – approximately 25% growth compared to current demand in Northern Norway.

  6. Report

Statnett increased investments by NOK 1.7 billion in H1 2026, with 271 active grid projects

    • Active construction projects grew from 248 at end-2025 to 271 in H1 2026; total investments reached NOK 6.4 billion – NOK 1.7 billion more than in H1 2025.
    • Capacity in existing facilities increased by up to 1,200 MW in H1 2026 (vs. 1,000 MW in 2025), primarily through temperature upgrades of power lines – 58 of 118 planned upgrade projects are underway.

Statnett halfway through Skaidi–Hammerfest power line: 130 foundations, 79 towers and 6.4 km of conductors complete

    • 130 foundations, 79 towers and 6.4 km of conductors installed following high activity through winter and spring; project is at the halfway point and on schedule.
    • Contractor Dalekovod is running foundation work, tower assembly and conductor stringing in parallel.

Statnett commissions new 420 kV switching station in Vestby after less than two years of construction

    • Langerud switching station at Tegnebyholtet in Vestby was commissioned this week after 1 year and 8 months of construction work that began in autumn 2024.
    • The station replaces a gas-insulated switchgear installation from 1984 at Tegneby that was old and in poor condition; the shift to an outdoor installation reduces the risk of large greenhouse gas emissions.

Nordic transmission system operators tighten grid connection requirements from July 2026 amid surging demand

    • Statnett, Fingrid, Energinet and Svenska kraftnät issued a joint statement highlighting a significant rise in grid connection requests and the need for coordinated Nordic solutions.
    • Statnett will introduce new maturity requirements for consumption projects of 100 MW and above from 1 July 2026, to ensure available grid capacity is allocated to projects with higher implementation readiness.

Statnett cuts industry tariff discount from 50% to 20% and introduces new capacity charge in transmission tariff

    • Two changes decided: (1) a new capacity charge based on peak demand, capped at 10% of the fixed tariff element in 2027 and phased up to 25% over four years; (2) the general industrial discount reduced from 50% to 20% over four years (5 percentage points per year for the first two years, then 10 percentage points for the next two).
    • Rationale: grid capacity has become scarce and major grid investments are needed — cost allocation should reflect actual capacity usage.
