NASA hands over world's northernmost satellite laser to Kartverket, completing the Ny-Ålesund geodetic observatory
- NASA has given the world's northernmost satellite laser (SLR) to Kartverket, the Norwegian Mapping Authority. The Earth observatory in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, is now finished after 15 years of work.
- Kartverket director Per Erik Opseth says the idea came 20 years ago. NASA spent almost 10 years building the instrument. It is now ready to use.

Kartverket leads the 'Power of Maps and Models' research area in the new LANDFUTURES centre
- Kartverket (the Norwegian Mapping Authority) has an important role in LANDFUTURES, a new national research centre. It will provide better knowledge, tools and maps for decisions on nature, climate and land use.
- The centre will help municipalities and regional authorities make more sustainable choices. Researchers, the public sector and other actors will work together.

Ice melt on Svalbard is accelerating land uplift and disturbing the global geodetic reference frame
- A new study in the Journal of Geodesy, led by Halfdan P. Kierulf at Kartverket, shows that ice melt on Svalbard affects the global reference frame. This is the shared measurement system used to fix exact positions on Earth.
- The land at the Ny-Ålesund measuring station is rising faster and faster. 25 years ago it was about 6 millimetres a year. Now it is nearly 14. Old models that assume steady speed no longer fit well.

Student projects in SUrbArea aim to give municipalities better geodata for stormwater management
- Kartverket works with municipalities, researchers and students in a project called SUrbArea. The aim is better map data, so municipalities can handle stormwater (rain and meltwater running off surfaces) and adapt to climate change.
- Heavier rain, growing cities and ageing infrastructure make stormwater a growing problem. Data on culverts and drainage facilities are kept in different systems and vary in quality.

Kartverket launches new HREF model and EPSG codes on 14 October 2026, correcting height errors of up to 10 cm
- On 14 October 2026 Kartverket launches a new height model called HREF. It is the first update since 2018. It makes heights measured by satellite (GNSS) match the heights in Norway's survey network.
- New survey lines showed errors of up to 10 cm in some areas between Agder and Møre og Romsdal. The biggest are at Haugalandet and around Hellesylt, Valldal and Eikesdalsvatnet. All points computed with GNSS are updated.

SAMTRANS project visits Ørland Air Station to strengthen civil-military preparedness coordination
- On 17 June 2026 the research project SAMTRANS visited Ørland Air Station, Norway's fighter jet base. At the same time, NATO's Ramstein Flag 2026 exercise was under way with 19 countries and over 150 aircraft. Often 50–60 aircraft with different tasks fly in the same mission.
- SAMTRANS runs from 2026 to 2028. It will create a shared way of working together to help the transport sector handle big crises. Hanne Seter from Sintef leads it, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration owns it, and the Research Council of Norway pays for it.
