Budget 2027: Basic loan and away-from-home grant to follow wage growth (G), while folk high school loan-to-grant conversion is cut
- The basic loan and the away-from-home grant are proposed to rise 4.21 percent for 2027–2028. Other support rates are proposed to rise 3.8 percent, matching price increases.
- The government wants these two benefits to follow G (the National Insurance basic amount), which tracks wages, not prices. This gives students and pupils living away from home more secure finances. They can focus on studies and still work a little.
