Norway's Mammography Programme at 30: over 31,400 breast cancers detected and mortality nearly halved

    • A new report from the Cancer Registry of Norway shows that over 31,400 breast cancers have been found through the Mammography Programme since 1996. More than 7 million invitations have been sent and 5.4 million examinations done.
    • Most cancers are found early, when tumours are small and have not spread. Then the outlook is better and treatment can be gentler.

Lancet commission: obesity, poor diet and inactivity are the biggest health threat to Norway to 2100

    • A group of experts appointed by The Lancet journal has compared which health threats will matter most up to the year 2100. It is the first time this has been done for so many threats. The report was presented in Berlin on 11 October and will be updated regularly.
    • The biggest threat, in Norway and worldwide, is high weight (BMI), unhealthy diet and too little exercise combined. They lead to type 2 diabetes, heart and blood vessel disease, cancer and muscle and joint problems. Much can be done to prevent this.

New calculation: Norway's dietary guideline on red meat implies only 11.5% reduction in domestic production

    • If Norwegians eat an average of no more than 350 g of red meat per week – the national dietary guideline – Norway would need to produce about 210,000 tonnes of meat per year. That is 11.5% less than what was actually supplied in 2025.
    • Earlier studies estimated much bigger cuts to production. The difference is in the method: this study looks at the population average, not whether every single person stays under the limit.

Influenza vaccination among over-65s rose to 69% in 2025–2026, but COVID-19 uptake drops sharply

    • 69% of people aged 65 and over got their flu vaccine in the 2025–2026 season – three percentage points more than the year before. Municipalities such as Utsira, Asker, Bergen, Bærum and Nordre Follo have reached the national goal of at least 75%.
    • Only 48% of people aged 75 and over received a COVID-19 vaccine – a clear drop from last season, seen across the whole country. FHI reminds people that protection fades over time and encourages more elderly residents to get vaccinated.
