New survey will show how Norway's space sector has developed since 2021

    • The Norwegian Space Agency is running a new survey of Norway's space sector. The firm Menon Economics designs the method, does the work and writes the report.
    • New figures for 2025 will be collected. The method is the same as last time, so the results can be compared. Norway will have two points in time to measure change against for the first time.

Norway and Canada sign space agreement on ocean monitoring, climate and satellite communications in the Arctic

    • The Norwegian Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) signed a joint declaration on 7 October about working together in the Arctic. It was presented at a big space congress, the IAC, in Antalya.
    • The countries will work together on watching the oceans, tracking climate and environment, and improving satellite communications in the Arctic. They may also cooperate on spaceports and launches, tracking objects in space, and talks on space rules and policy.

Record attendance at Andøya: 300 experts from 127 organisations test GPS resilience as FFI warns of daily jamming in eastern Finnmark

    • For the fifth year running, Jammertest on Andøya brings together experts to test whether GPS and navigation equipment can withstand interference and fake signals — it is the largest open event of its kind in the world.
    • This year 300 people from 127 organisations attend; Boeing and Garmin are joining for the first time, alongside Nokia, Ericsson and the European Commission.

ESA's plant-health and ocean-monitoring satellites set for launch from French Guiana in September 2026

    • Two satellites – FLEX and Sentinel-3C – have arrived at Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, and are due to launch in September 2026 on a Vega-C rocket.
    • Sentinel-3C is the third in a series that watches over the oceans, measuring water colour, surface temperature, wave height, and wind speed, and also monitoring lakes, glaciers, and the atmosphere. Norwegian agencies and researchers already use data from the first two satellites in the series.

Thirty years of satellite data reveal accelerating ice loss and fracturing in Antarctica

    • New satellite images from March 2026 show large cracks and broken sections in two of Antarctica's biggest ice shelves – damage that did not exist when the same locations were imaged in 1995.
    • The ice is sliding into the ocean faster than before, and the point where it lifts off the seabed has moved inland. Both changes mean more ice enters the sea, contributing to rising sea levels.

Sentinel-1A retired on 29 June 2026 after more than 12 years in orbit – succeeded by Sentinel-1C and -1D

    • Sentinel-1A launched on 3 April 2014 and was meant to last seven years, but kept working until it was officially switched off on 29 June 2026.
    • From 2021 it had to do the work of two satellites on its own, after its twin Sentinel-1B broke down.

EarthCARE satellite's cloud radar data integrated into global weather forecasting for the first time on 10 June 2026

    • From 10 June 2026, Europe's main weather forecasting centre (ECMWF) started using real data from EarthCARE's cloud radar in its weather models – a world first for this type of satellite data.
    • EarthCARE was launched in May 2024 by the European space agency ESA and Japan's JAXA. Its radar can see inside clouds and measure their thickness, droplet size and water content.

NILU satellite study: 80% of 2,475 cities show decoupling of economic growth from fossil fuel use, but cities in India and the Middle East are moving in the opposite direction

    • Researchers looked at 5,435 cities with more than 100,000 people between 2019 and 2024. Of these, 2,475 had clear enough data to analyse.
    • In about 80% of those cities, the economy grew but nitrogen dioxide (NO₂ – a gas from traffic and industry) did not grow as fast or fell. This was mainly in Europe, China and North America.

ESA's ERS-1 satellite launched in 1991 laid the foundation for Norway's space industry and maritime surveillance

    • ERS-1 launched on 17 July 1991 and worked until March 2000. Norway started preparing back in 1983, when a government report concluded that satellites could help monitor Norwegian waters.
    • The satellite's radar worked through clouds and in darkness, and its path over the poles meant it passed Norwegian waters often – ideal for spotting sea ice, ships and oil spills.
